Xpedition visits Isla-Espanola

Few places on earth feel as untouched as the Galapagos Island, an archipelago of volcanic islands in the Eastern Pacific. Home to some of the planet’s greatest biodiversity, this UNESCO World Heritage Site has been inspiring explorers for centuries. Just as Charles Darwin’s 1835 visit shaped his theory of evolution, our own journey here gave us an entirely new appreciation for nature.

Beginning in Quito, Ecuador

Our adventure started in Quito, Ecuador’s vibrant capital city and another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Strolling through the cobblestone streets of its historic center, we soaked in the charm of colonial architecture and lively plazas.

One of the most surreal moments came just outside the city, where we stood at the Equator — one foot planted in the Northern Hemisphere, the other in the Southern. It was the perfect prelude to the wonders awaiting us on the Galapagos Island.

Boarding Our Galapagos Island Cruise

Flying into Baltra, we boarded the HX MS Santa Cruz II, our home at sea. With just 90 passengers onboard, the ship felt intimate and personal — the kind of place where the staff quickly learn your name and naturalists share their passion for the islands.

The balance was perfect: high-quality surroundings with a relaxed atmosphere, and a true expedition spirit.

Exploring the Islands, One by One

Every day of our Galapagos Island cruise felt like stepping into a new world.

  • Santiago Island greeted us with rugged lava fields.
  • Rábida Island stunned us with its red-sand beaches.
  • Bartolomé Island offered panoramic views after a steep climb.
  • Genovesa Island dazzled us with birdlife at every turn.
  • Santa Cruz Island brought us face-to-face with the legendary giant tortoises.

Each island had its own ecosystem, climate, and surprises.

Wildlife Moments We’ll Never Forget

It’s impossible to talk about the Galapagos Island without talking about the wildlife.

  • Watching marine iguanas sunbathe on black rocks.
  • Snorkeling with penguins and playful sea lions.
  • Seeing the colors of blue- and red-footed boobies up close.
  • Spotting Darwin’s finches, each a little different, just as Darwin observed.

Every encounter felt deeply personal — not like being in a zoo, but as a guest in their world.

Life Onboard: The Expedition Spirit

When we weren’t ashore, life on the Santa Cruz II kept us immersed in discovery.

Our days included:

  • Zodiac rides to hidden coves
  • Morning hikes across lava landscapes
  • Snorkeling with manta rays and reef sharks
  • Stargazing on the open deck
  • Engaging lectures from naturalists

The ship’s Expedition Team — many locals born and raised in Ecuador — made every excursion more meaningful, weaving in culture, science, and storytelling.

Reflections on Our Galapagos Island Escape

The Galapagos Island gave us more than an adventure; it gave us memories that will last a lifetime.

We left with hearts full of gratitude — for the landscapes, the wildlife, the people, and the chance to step into such a rare and protected world.

For us, this wasn’t just another trip. It was a reminder of why we travel: to connect, to learn, and to be humbled by the beauty of our planet. Truly, the Galapagos Island is the perfect Escapadita.
