Montana Travel Guide: Glacier, Yellowstone, and Big Sky Adventures
Montana, known as Big Sky Country, is a land of wide-open spaces, tall mountains, and endless skies. Located in the northern United States, Montana is famous for its national parks, lakes, and friendly small towns. It’s a place where nature feels bigger, the air feels fresher, and adventure is always around the corner.
Recently, Southwest Airlines started flights from San Diego to Montana, making it easy to explore this outdoor wonderland. Since the airline is pet friendly, we brought our dog Winky along. Landing in Bozeman, we were greeted by blue skies, fresh pine air, and the promise of adventure.
Glacier National Park
One of our first stops was Glacier National Park, and it was breathtaking. The park has glaciers, alpine meadows, valleys, and lakes that look like they belong on a postcard. With more than 700 miles of hiking trails, we could walk for hours and sometimes not see another person.
The famous Going-to-the-Sun Road is a must-see. It stretches 50 miles across the mountains and crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. Driving this road with Winky by our side, we felt like we were on top of the world.
Kootenai National Forest and Falls
Another unforgettable stop was Kootenai National Forest, near the town of Libby. Here, the Kootenai River flows over Kootenai Falls, one of the largest free-flowing waterfalls in the Northwest.
We hiked through the forest to the Swinging Bridge, which hangs above the rushing river. It wasn’t a hard hike, but it was thrilling to cross. For the Kootenai Tribe, these falls are a sacred place. They believe it is the center of the world, where they connect with spiritual forces that guide the tribe.
