Transylvania, the land beyond the forest, is one of Europe’s most magical regions. On our journey, we combined history, castles, food, and culture while exploring Romania’s capital city, Bucharest, and the forested region of Transylvania.
Transylvania is a region in central Romania, surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. It is famous for its medieval towns, castles, and legends of Dracula. But beyond the myths, it is also a land of warm people, hearty food, and stunning landscapes.
We began in Bucharest, often called the “Paris of the East”. Once a communist capital, today it is alive with art, food, architecture, and wine culture.
At the 130-year-old Caru’ cu Bere restaurant, we tasted roasted pork knuckle with sour cabbage, polenta, horseradish, chili pepper, and local beer. Romanian food is rich in flavor, with pork, mutton, and veal among the favorites.
From Bucharest, we drove toward Transylvania, where medieval towns and castles awaited.
The Gothic castle tied to the legend of Dracula. While Bram Stoker never visited Romania, the castle’s mystery and history of Vlad the Impaler make it a must-see.
We stayed in Brașov, a lively town surrounded by mountains. The Town Hall Square is perfect for strolling, shopping, and dining. Nearby, the Black Church, the largest Gothic church in Romania, still holds one of the biggest pipe organs in Eastern Europe.
Other towns to explore:
Transylvania is not only about castles. The Carpathian Mountains offer hiking, skiing, and wildlife, including the brown bear. Villages with fortified churches (many UNESCO-listed) show how locals once defended themselves from invasions.
Romania is a deeply religious country, with many Orthodox churches across the land. Tradition is seen in folk dances, colorful costumes, and hearty meals. Don’t miss:
For us, Transylvania felt like stepping into a storybook. With its castles, medieval towns, mountains, and warm people, it’s more than just Dracula’s land—it’s a place full of life, history, and beauty.
Romania is truly a country of picturesque towns, geographical wonders, Dracula’s legend, and unforgettable culture—making it a perfect escapadita.
