Dinkelsbühl

The Romantische Straße, or Romantic Road, is Germany’s most famous scenic route. Stretching about 350 kilometers from Würzburg in the north to Füssen in the south, it winds through fairy-tale castles, medieval towns, and peaceful countryside. For us, it was a trip filled with beauty, culture, and history.

Our Journey Begins

We began our adventure in Munich and set out by car. Our first big stop was the magical Neuschwanstein Castle, built by King Ludwig II. Standing inside its towers and looking out across the hills, we understood why it inspired Walt Disney’s castle. It felt like stepping into a fairy tale.

From there, we drove past farms and small villages until we reached Donauwörth. After enjoying a warm Bavarian dinner, we continued to Dinkelsbühl, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Germany. Its timbered houses and churches told stories from over 800 years of history, and we loved that the town survived both World Wars without damage.

The next highlight was Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This walled town enchanted us with cobblestone streets, Christmas shops, and cozy restaurants. Walking through Rothenburg at night felt like traveling back in time.

Other Highlights of the Romantische Straße

While our journey focused on a few towns, the Romantische Straße has many other gems worth visiting:

  • Würzburg – Starting point of the road, with the UNESCO-listed Würzburg Residence and famous vineyards.
  • Nördlingen – A perfectly round medieval town built inside a meteor crater.
  • Augsburg – One of Germany’s oldest cities, full of fountains and Renaissance charm.
  • Füssen – At the end of the road, near the Alps, surrounded by lakes and castles.

Travel Tips We Learned

  • Best Time to Visit: Spring and summer bring flowers and festivals. Winter is magical, especially with Christmas markets.
  • How to Travel: By car for freedom, by bus for comfort, or even by bike if you want a slow adventure.
  • How Long to Spend: 3 days for highlights, up to a week to enjoy everything.
  • Where to Stay: Family-run inns, guesthouses, and even castle hotels made our nights unforgettable.

Why We Loved the Romantische Straße

The Romantische Straße is more than just a road. For us, it was a storybook come to life. Every town felt different—some quiet, some lively, but all full of charm. From the castles above the hills to the cobblestone streets below, the journey brought us closer to Germany’s culture and history.
