The Mission Inn Hotel SPA

A Timeless Southern California Getaway

When we first arrived at The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa in Riverside, California, we immediately felt the presence of history all around us. What began in 1876 as a small adobe guesthouse has grown into a full city block filled with European-inspired architecture, lush courtyards, and treasures collected from around the world. Owners Duane and Kelly Roberts have beautifully preserved the hotel’s old-world charm while blending it with modern luxury across 238 guest rooms and suites.

Walking Through History

Exploring the property felt like stepping back in time. We wandered through narrow cobblestone walkways, paused by stained-glass windows, and admired hidden corners of the hotel that resembled a European village. Knowing that eight U.S. Presidents had stayed here—including Taft, Hoover, Kennedy, Nixon, and Reagan—made it all the more magical. Standing inside the Presidential Lounge, built in 1902, we couldn’t help but imagine the conversations that once echoed within those walls.

Our Accommodations

Our guest room was spacious yet cozy, with antique touches that carried the inn’s history into the present. We opened the windows to views of the courtyard and felt the peaceful atmosphere that makes this hotel such a favorite for romantic getaways. Every detail—from the hand-carved furnishings to the serene lighting—added to the charm.

Dining Highlights

One of our favorite parts of the stay was discovering the hotel’s dining options. We enjoyed a classic California breakfast at The Mission Inn Restaurant before strolling through the property. Dinner at Duane’s Prime Steaks & Seafood was unforgettable—rich flavors, fresh seafood, and award-winning wines, all enjoyed beneath historic wooden beams and fine art. Of course, we couldn’t leave without stopping by Casey’s Cupcakes, where the playful décor and sweet treats made us feel like kids again.

A Spa Experience Like No OtherA Spa Experience Like No Other

Relaxation was a highlight of our stay. At Kelly’s Spa, we treated ourselves to a couples’ massage and felt instantly renewed. The Tuscan-inspired décor, calming aromas, and world-class treatments made it easy to see why it was listed among Condé Nast’s Top 10 Spas. It was the perfect balance of luxury and serenity.

Wandering & Discovering

As we explored, we came across the St. Francis of Assisi Chapel with original Tiffany stained-glass windows—a breathtaking reminder of the inn’s artistic treasures. Later, we dined al fresco in the Spanish Patio under a 1700s clock tower, the romantic setting illuminated by soft lights as the evening set in.

Weddings & Events

Even if you’re not getting married, it’s easy to understand why so many couples choose the Mission Inn as their wedding venue. The chapels, courtyards, and ballrooms each carry a different story, offering one of the most picturesque settings in Southern California.

Special Seasonal Magic

We didn’t get to experience it this time, but the Festival of Lights is one of the hotel’s most celebrated events. Each winter, millions of lights transform the property into a holiday wonderland, drawing visitors from across the state. It’s something we definitely plan to return for.

Exploring Riverside

During our visit, we also wandered beyond the hotel. The Riverside Art Museum and Fox Performing Arts Center were just steps away, and a short hike up Mount Rubidoux offered sweeping views of the city. Staying at the Mission Inn made it easy to enjoy both luxury and adventure.

Our Takeaway

Our weekend at The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa was more than a getaway—it was an experience. Between the history, the world-class dining, the relaxing spa, and the sense of timeless charm, we felt both inspired and renewed. Whether you’re planning a romantic retreat, a family vacation, or simply want to step into California history, this Riverside landmark is worth every moment.
