We began our adventure to The Ozarks by flying Southwest Airlines into Tulsa, Oklahoma. From there, we drove through rolling hills and green forests into the heart of the region. The Ozarks stretch across northern Arkansas, southern Missouri, and parts of Oklahoma and Kansas. They are known for clear rivers, limestone bluffs, caves, and miles of trails.
Our first stop was Ponca, Arkansas, a small town tucked into the Buffalo National River wilderness. The Buffalo is the first National River in the United States, and it is perfect for floating, fishing, or simply enjoying the scenery.
In Ponca, we hiked trails that led to tall cliffs and quiet waterfalls. The river was peaceful and clear, surrounded by mountains. This little town felt like a hidden gem and quickly became one of our favorite spots in The Ozarks.
Next, we drove north into southern Missouri to visit Dogwood Canyon Nature Park. This private park covers 10,000 acres and was founded by Johnny Morris, the creator of Bass Pro Shops.
We spent the day walking past waterfalls, caves, and streams filled with trout. Visitors can hike, bike, ride horses, or even take a wildlife tram tour. It felt like every turn revealed something new. The park also focuses on conservation, which made the experience even more meaningful.
Our trip continued to Bentonville, Arkansas, the hometown of Walmart. While known for business, the town surprised us with its culture.
We visited the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, founded by Alice Walton. The museum sits on 120 acres of ponds and forest trails. Walking through the galleries, we saw incredible works of art from colonial times to today. The building itself, designed by architect Moshe Safdie, was just as breathtaking as the art inside.
The Ozarks have so much more to offer than we could see in one trip:
We traveled in the spring, which was the perfect season. Wildflowers were blooming, the weather was cool, and the rivers were full of life. Fall is also popular for its colorful leaves. Summer is great for lake trips, though it can be hot, while winter is quieter with fewer crowds.
Along the way, we enjoyed small diners and local restaurants. The Ozarks are known for comfort food like BBQ, fried chicken, cornbread, and fresh trout. We also saw signs of the region’s folk music and craft traditions, which give The Ozarks their unique culture.
Our time in The Ozarks gave us everything we hoped for—mountains, rivers, caves, waterfalls, and even art. From the quiet beauty of Ponca to the vast trails of Dogwood Canyon and the stunning Crystal Bridges Museum, every stop gave us something new to discover.
If you love nature, small towns, and adventure, The Ozarks are the perfect escape.
