Moonrise

The Queen Mary, permanently docked in Long Beach just two hours from San Diego, is one of the most famous ocean liners in the world. Once a luxury cruise ship carrying royalty, celebrities, and dignitaries, The Queen Mary is now a floating hotel, museum, and attraction that blends history, elegance, and a touch of the paranormal.

History of The Queen Mary

Construction of The Queen Mary began in 1930 in Clydebank, Scotland. Launched in 1936 under the Cunard Line, she was celebrated as the grandest ocean liner of her time. For three years after her maiden voyage, The Queen Mary transported Hollywood stars, politicians, and royalty across the Atlantic in unrivaled luxury.

In September 1939, with the onset of World War II, her role changed dramatically. Painted in camouflage gray and nicknamed the “Grey Ghost,” The Queen Mary carried thousands of troops during the war. After returning to civilian service, she continued to sail until her final voyage in 1967, when she arrived in Long Beach, where she remains today as a beloved Southern California landmark.
