We were ready to travel again, and Southwest Airlines made it easy. From San Diego Airport, we checked in smoothly, wore our masks, and felt safe every step of the way. With no middle seats, we had extra space for our snacks and iPad during the short one-hour-fifteen-minute flight to Phoenix. The crew was welcoming, and before we knew it, we had landed.
From Phoenix, it was a two-hour drive to Sedona. The desert slowly changed to stunning red rock formations, mesas, and canyons. The views along the Red Rock Scenic Byway were breathtaking, and we knew our adventure had begun.
Hiking in Sedona Red Rock Country
Our main goal was hiking, and Sedona did not disappoint. We explored the Coconino National Forest, where the fresh breeze through the pines felt amazing. For hikers of all levels, there are many popular trails:
Cathedral Rock Trail – Short but steep, with rewarding views.
Bell Rock Pathway – Easy and family-friendly, great for beginners.
Devil’s Bridge Trail – A must-see natural rock arch perfect for photos.
We felt connected to the land, and every trail showed a new side of Sedona’s beauty.
Spiritual and Cultural Highlights
Sedona is also famous for its energy vortexes. These are spots where people feel calm and renewed. We visited the Chapel of the Holy Cross, a church built into the red rocks on one of these vortexes. The setting was peaceful and inspiring.
Art and culture are everywhere here. Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village is a beautiful shopping area with more than 50 galleries and specialty shops. Walking through its shaded courtyards, arched doorways, and cobblestone paths felt like stepping into old Mexico.
More Things to Do in Sedona
Beyond hiking and shopping, Sedona offers many outdoor adventures:
Jeep tours across rugged desert trails.
Hot air balloon rides at sunrise.
Stargazing under some of the clearest night skies in Arizona.
And, of course, the local dining scene is worth exploring. From casual cafés to fine dining with red rock views, every meal adds to the experience.
When to Visit Sedona Red Rock Country
The best times to visit are spring (March–May) and fall (September–November). The weather is mild, perfect for hiking and exploring. Summer can be hot, while winter is cooler but still beautiful.
