Located in the western Pacific Ocean, about 100 miles off the southeastern coast of mainland China, the beautiful island of Taiwan covers approximately 14,400 square miles. The island is longer than it is wide, with nearly two-thirds of its landscape covered by forested mountains. The remaining area consists of rolling hills, highlands, coastal plains, and fertile basins, creating a diverse and scenic environment.

Our journey took us to the vibrant capital city of Taipei in northern Taiwan, where modern architecture blends seamlessly with centuries-old traditions. The city offers a fascinating combination of rich history, cultural landmarks, and dynamic urban life.
We began at Lungshan Temple, one of Taipei’s most famous and historic temples. Dedicated to Guanyin (Guanshiyin Buddha) and other deities, the temple is renowned for its intricate architecture and peaceful atmosphere. Throughout the temple, beautifully displayed Chinese poems, verses, and inscriptions add a literary touch that enhances its spiritual significance.

No visit to Taipei would be complete without experiencing Taipei 101. For many years the tallest building in the world, this iconic skyscraper stands 508 meters (1,667 feet) tall. The first Observation Deck on the 89th floor offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, but it is the visit to the new and exclusive Secret Garden on the 101st floor that steals the show. At the base of the tower is one of Taiwan’s premier shopping destinations, featuring luxury boutiques, restaurants, and entertainment.

In the heart of the city lies Liberty Square, a massive public plaza home to the National Theater, the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.

The National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall was built to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the Republic of China, the official name of the country we know as Taiwan. Inspired by the architecture of a traditional Chinese palace, this grand and elegant hall is one of Taipei’s most important landmarks. Every hour, visitors can witness the formal change of the guard ceremony, a memorable sight that should not be missed.

Next to it, you will find the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, a monumental landmark built to honor the former military dictator and president. The striking white marble structure features an octagonal blue-tiled roof which symbolize liberty and equality. You ascend two massive staircases, each with 89 steps representing Chiang’s age at death. Inside, a giant bronze statue of Chiang sits under an ornate ceiling.

As evening falls, Taipei comes alive with its famous night markets, where we experienced the city’s energetic atmosphere, delicious street food, and endless shopping opportunities. Shilin Night Market, one of the largest and most popular in Taipei, offers everything from local delicacies to fashionable clothing. Huaxi Street Tourist Night Market, known for its traditional Chinese lanterns, provides a distinctive cultural experience with its historic charm. Ningxia Night Market was our favorite with more shopping, street performers and food stalls. The variety of Taiwanese cuisine is truly impressive. Popular specialties include pan-fried buns, xiao long bao (soup dumplings), tempura, shaved ice desserts, Taiwanese meatballs, and countless other local favorites.
