Banff National Park

Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, Banff National Park is a breathtaking wilderness wonderland that captures the imagination of adventurers and nature lovers alike. As Canada’s first national park, established in 1885, this UNESCO World Heritage Site spans over 6,600 square kilometers of pure mountain majesty.

Must-See Highlights

Lake Louise steals the show with its turquoise glacial fed waters framed by dramatic peaks, while Moraine Lake offers equally stunning views. The charming town of Banff serves as your base, where you can board the Banff Gondola for panoramic vistas or soak in the historic Banff Upper Hot Springs.

Getting Around

Navigate the park using the efficient Roam public transit system, or drive the iconic Icefields Parkway, one of the world’s most scenic highways. We rented a car for flexibility, though shuttle services connect major attractions and parking is a challenge in town.

Essential Information

You will need a valid Parks Canada Discovery Pass for entry. You can purchase it online or at park gates which in some cases are right on the highway! Both daily or annual options are available.

Insider Tips

Wildlife spotting is incredible here. Keep your eyes peeled for elk, bighorn sheep, and even grizzly bears (from a safe distance!). Visit in shoulder seasons for fewer crowds like we did, or embrace winter for world-class skiing at three nearby resorts.

Esteban Villanueva, Travel Advisor. I have lived in San Diego for 51 years, except for a few when I went to college and law school! My wife and I have traveled together to 58 countries. I grew up in San Diego and love to explore every corner of the County. As magazine publishers and travel advisors, we get to visit every venue, museum, restaurant, hotel and neighborhood and discover what makes it unique and exciting. I enjoy living other cultures, walking new neighborhoods, driving new journeys and eating new foods! Travel is accessible to everyone – whether driving out to a National Forest, or flying to other side of the planet, travel is the experience of exploring somewhere new, enjoying it and learning from it.
