Scottish Highlands Travel Guide: Scenery, Castles, and Adventure
0
The Scottish Highlands are one of the most breathtaking regions in Europe. Known for wide open landscapes, ancient castles, and dramatic mountains, the Highlands are a dream for travelers looking for both peace and adventure. It is the perfect place to enjoy nature, history, and romance all in one trip.
We started our trip in Edinburgh and drove north through some of the most beautiful countryside we had ever seen. Our first night was spent at the Cromlix Hotel, built in 1880. Each room has unique charm and overlooks the gardens. Tennis legend Andy Murray owns the hotel, and guests can try fishing, archery, or even see a falconry display.
Nearby, we explored Doune Castle, a 14th-century fortress with a massive gatehouse. Fans of film and TV may recognize it — it has appeared in Game of Thrones, Outlander, and even Monty Python. The audio tour lets you pick which version of history you want to follow.
Driving deeper into the Highlands, we reached Glencoe. Once an ancient volcano, glaciers carved out this dramatic valley. Standing there, surrounded by towering mountains, felt like stepping into another world.
From the fishing village of Mallaig, we took the ferry to the Isle of Skye, one of the most magical parts of the Highlands. Our first stop was the Fairy Pools, where waterfalls flow into clear blue pools. The beauty of the place almost made it feel unreal.
Later, we drove to Neist Point, the western edge of Skye. With its lighthouse, cliffs, and ocean views, it was one of the most dramatic places we had ever seen. That night, we stayed at the Edinbane Lodge, the oldest inn on Skye, built in 1543.
The next morning, we visited Portree, the island’s capital, before heading north. We passed Kilt Rock and the famous Old Man of Storr before reaching the Quiraing. The hike there was unforgettable — cliffs, lakes, and green valleys stretched as far as we could see.
From our travels, here are a few highlights you should not miss when visiting the Scottish Highlands:
On our way back to Inverness for our flight home, we drove past Loch Ness. Sadly, we didn’t see Nessie, but the journey itself was unforgettable. The Scottish Highlands gave us mountains, castles, fairy pools, and memories we will never forget.
