Up North Minnesota is where people go for fresh air, small towns, and outdoor fun. Known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” (really 11,842), this region is full of adventure in every season. From snowmobiling in the winter to fishing and hiking in the summer, Up North is the perfect escape.

Getting There

We flew into Minneapolis on Southwest Airlines and then rented a car. In just two hours heading north, the scenery changed. Rolling hills, frozen lakes, and pine forests welcomed us to a whole new world.

Winter Adventures in Up North Minnesota

Our trip was in winter, and it felt like a wonderland. The state has more than 22,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, so we rented snowmobiles, bundled up, and hit the trails. Even at -11°F, the right rental gear made the ride safe and fun.

The frozen lakes offer even more surprises. We drove our SUV straight onto the ice—over a foot thick—and parked at our heated fish house. Inside, we had chairs, a stove, and even a stereo. Through holes in the floor, we dropped our fishing lines and caught plenty of fish, all without stepping into the cold.

Other winter activities include:

  • Cross-country skiing
  • Snowshoeing
  • Ice skating
  • Pond hockey
  • Fat biking on snow trails
  • Skijoring (skiing with a dog team)

Summer and Fall in Up North Minnesota

Up North isn’t just for winter. In the summer, the lakes come alive with boating, swimming, and fishing. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area near Ely is world-famous for canoe trips and camping under the stars. Hiking trails lead to waterfalls and quiet forests.

Fall is just as special. The trees glow with red, orange, and gold. It’s the perfect season for hiking, apple picking, or enjoying a hot meal after a crisp day outside.

Small Towns and Places to Visit

  • Duluth: A lively port city on Lake Superior with shops, breweries, and a famous lakewalk.
  • Grand Marais: An artsy town on the North Shore, great for galleries and cozy cafes.
  • Brainerd Lakes: Known for resorts, fishing, and family fun.
  • Ely: The gateway to the Boundary Waters.

Where to Stay

Visitors can pick from rustic cabins, lakeside resorts, cozy lodges, or campgrounds. In winter, fish houses on the lakes make for a unique overnight adventure.

Food and Local Flavor

No trip Up North is complete without trying local favorites like wild rice soup, fresh walleye, and a classic Minnesota hotdish. Many small towns also have local breweries to warm up after a long day outside.

  • Best Time to Visit: Winter for snow sports, summer for lakes, fall for colors.
  • What to Pack: Layers of warm clothes in winter, bug spray in summer, hiking boots year-round.
