Esteban and Danitza at Pilaa Beach in Kauai

Kaua’i Hawaii is called “The Garden Isle for a reason. It is the oldest island in the Hawaiian chain and one of the most beautiful. With tall mountains, deep valleys, and a coastline full of beaches, it feels like a natural paradise. Much of the island is covered in rainforest, making it one of the wettest places on earth.

Getting there is easy from San Diego with Southwest Airlines, which flies directly into Lihue Airport. From there, you are ready to start your Kaua’i Hawaii adventure.

Where to Stay in Kaua’i Hawaii

With less than 75,000 people, Kaua’i has a small-town charm. The island has one main road that runs east to west. To enjoy it fully, we stayed in two areas:

  • North Shore – Full of waterfalls, jungle-covered mountains, and the famous Nā Pali Coast. We stayed at The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas, which overlooks Hanalei Bay and puts you right in the heart of Kaua’i’s natural beauty.
  • South Shore (Poipu) – Sunny and calm, with great beaches. Here we chose a private rental so we could enjoy our own kitchen and more space.

Tip: Renting a car is the best way to explore Kaua’i Hawaii since public transport is limited.

Things to Do in Kaua’i Hawaii

Here is the list of things you can do in Kaua’i Hawaii.

Volunteer Hike

We joined a private hike on the northeast coast with our guide, Jeremiah. On the trail, we picked up marine debris, saw monk seals and sea turtles resting on the sand, and helped keep the beaches clean.

Botanic Gardens

  • Limahuli Garden & Preserve (North Shore): Home to rare plants and birds found only in Hawaii.
  • Allerton Garden (South Shore): A tropical paradise with giant rainforest trees, fruit gardens, and even filming spots from Jurassic Park.

Adventure and Nature

  • Waimea Canyon – Known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”
  • Hanalei Bay – Great for swimming, surfing, or just relaxing.
  • Tunnels Beach – Perfect for snorkeling.
  • Wailua River – Try kayaking or paddleboarding.
  • Helicopter tours – See waterfalls and cliffs from above

Where to Eat in Kaua’i Hawaii

Food is fresh and full of flavor on the island.

  • Ahi Tuna: Try it as poke, grilled, or in tacos.
  • Local Favorites: Loco Moco (rice, hamburger patty, egg, and gravy), Spam Musubi, and plate lunches.
  • Shave Ice: Stop at JoJo’s Shave Ice in Waimea. Their Haupia cream topping, made with coconut cream and macadamia nut ice cream, is unforgettable.
  • Farmers Markets: Both North and South Shore have markets where you can taste fresh fruit and local treats.

  • Summer (April–September): Warm, sunny, and great for beaches.
